SyteLine Warehouse Location Setup and Configuration Guide
Warehouse location configuration in SyteLine defines the physical storage structure that drives all inventory put-away, picking, and cycle counting operations. A well-designed location hierarchy improves picking efficiency, reduces misplaced inventory, and enables directed put-away rules. This guide covers the complete location setup from site definition through bin-level configuration.
Location Hierarchy Design
SyteLine organizes warehouse locations through a hierarchy of Site, Warehouse, and Location records. The Sites form defines each physical facility, the Warehouses form (SLWhses IDO) creates storage areas within a site, and the Locations form (SLLocations IDO) defines individual storage positions. The location field on the whse_loc table supports structured naming conventions like ZONE-AISLE-RACK-BIN for easy identification.
- Define sites on the Sites form for each physical facility with address and timezone configuration
- Create warehouses under each site using the SLWhses IDO with default GL accounts and costing groups
- Configure locations with structured naming (e.g., A-01-03-B for Zone A, Aisle 01, Rack 03, Bin B)
- Set location types including Bulk, Pick, Stage, QC Hold, Shipping Dock, and Receiving Dock
- Enable ranked location sequences for directed put-away using the loc_rank field on each location record
Location Properties and Constraints
Each location record in the whse_loc table carries properties that control what can be stored and how transactions interact with it. The loc_type field determines whether a location is a standard storage bin, a staging area, or an inspection hold zone. Capacity constraints including max_qty, max_weight, and max_volume prevent over-stocking. The perm_item_flag restricts locations to specific items for dedicated storage strategies.
- Set max_qty, max_weight, and max_volume on locations to enforce physical capacity limits during put-away
- Use perm_item_flag to dedicate locations to specific items for high-velocity or hazardous material storage
- Configure loc_type to control transaction behavior: QC Hold locations block picking until release
- Enable mixed_items flag to allow multiple item numbers in a single location for smaller components
- Define default_loc on the item-warehouse record (SLItemWhse IDO) for automatic put-away routing
Location Integration with Transactions
Once locations are configured, all inventory transactions reference specific locations. PO receipts direct items to receiving dock locations, then put-away transactions move them to storage. The Pick/Pack/Ship process pulls from pick locations based on allocation rules. The loc field appears on every transaction record in the matltran table, enabling location-level inventory accuracy tracking.
- Material Receipts default to the warehouse receiving location before put-away processing
- Put-away transactions move received goods from dock to storage using directed or manual location selection
- Picking operations allocate from locations based on FIFO, FEFO, or location rank sequences
- Transfer transactions between locations maintain full audit trail in the matltran table
- Location-level on-hand queries via the SLItemLocations IDO support real-time inventory visibility
