Setting Up the SyteLine Mobile Warehouse Management App

The SyteLine mobile warehouse application extends CloudSuite Industrial's WMS capabilities to handheld devices, enabling warehouse staff to perform receiving, putaway, picking, packing, shipping, and inventory counting directly from the floor. The mobile app communicates with SyteLine through IDO REST API calls, providing real-time inventory visibility and eliminating the delay between physical operations and system updates. Proper setup ensures reliable connectivity, optimized workflows, and a user experience suited for warehouse environments.

Mobile App Infrastructure and Device Setup

The SyteLine mobile warehouse app runs on Android-based rugged devices from Zebra (TC52x, TC57, MC9300) or Honeywell (CT60, CK65, Dolphin CT40). The app connects to the SyteLine backend through the ION API Gateway for cloud deployments or directly to the IFS REST endpoint for on-premise installations. Deploy the app through an MDM (Mobile Device Management) solution like SOTI MobiControl, VMware Workspace ONE, or Zebra StageNow for centralized configuration and updates. Configure the Wi-Fi profile for the warehouse network with WPA2-Enterprise authentication to ensure secure connectivity across all coverage zones.

  • Supported devices: Zebra TC52x (cold storage rated), MC9300 (forklift mount), Honeywell CK65 (long-range scan)
  • MDM deployment: push app APK, server URL, and Wi-Fi profiles through SOTI or Workspace ONE to all warehouse devices
  • Network requirements: minimum 2 Mbps per device, <100ms latency to SyteLine server, seamless AP roaming with 802.11r
  • Wi-Fi coverage: conduct a site survey with Ekahau or AirMagnet to ensure -67 dBm minimum signal across all aisles
  • Device configuration: Zebra StageNow profiles for kiosk mode, battery management, and scanner trigger mapping

Warehouse Workflow Configuration

Configure mobile workflows in SyteLine to match your warehouse operational procedures. The receiving workflow guides the user through PO selection, line scanning, quantity confirmation, lot/serial capture, and putaway location assignment. The picking workflow presents pick lists sorted by optimal pick path, validates each pick with location and item barcode scans, and confirms picked quantities. The shipping workflow consolidates picked items into shipments, prints shipping labels, and posts the shipment transaction. Each workflow is configurable through SyteLine's Mobile Configuration forms where you define step sequences, required fields, and validation rules.

  • Receiving: Mobile Configuration > Receiving Workflow > enable lot tracking, serial capture, and quality hold staging
  • Putaway: configure system-directed putaway rules based on item class, ABC velocity, and storage zone capacity
  • Picking: set pick path optimization by zone-batch, wave, or discrete order picking based on volume requirements
  • Packing: enable pack station workflow with weight capture, carton selection, and packing slip generation
  • Shipping: configure carrier integration for UPS, FedEx, and LTL carriers with auto-rate shopping and label printing

Real-Time Inventory Visibility and Error Handling

The mobile app provides real-time inventory visibility by querying SyteLine IDOs for on-hand quantities, allocated stock, and pending transactions at the moment of each scan. When a warehouse operator scans a location, the app displays expected items and quantities, highlighting discrepancies with visual alerts. Error handling is critical for warehouse operations: the app must handle network interruptions gracefully by queuing transactions for automatic retry when connectivity resumes. Implement visual and audible feedback on the device for successful scans, validation errors, and connectivity loss to keep operators informed without interrupting their workflow.

  • Real-time query: each location scan triggers LoadCollection on SLLotLoc with Whse, Loc, and Item filters
  • Discrepancy alerts: highlight when scanned quantity differs from expected quantity by more than the tolerance threshold
  • Network resilience: queue failed API calls in local SQLite database and retry with exponential backoff on reconnection
  • Visual feedback: green LED flash for successful scan, red flash with vibration for validation error on Zebra devices
  • Connectivity indicator: persistent status bar showing real-time connection quality and pending transaction count
