SyteLine First Article Inspection (FAI) Process Configuration

First Article Inspection in Infor SyteLine validates that a new or changed manufacturing process produces parts conforming to all design specifications before full production begins. The FAI process, governed by standards like AS9102 (aerospace) and PPAP (automotive), requires comprehensive dimensional measurement, material certification verification, and process capability demonstration. SyteLine's quality module supports FAI execution through specialized inspection plans, detailed measurement recording in the SLQualityResults IDO, and integration with production job orders.

FAI Plan and Balloon Drawing Configuration

FAI inspection plans differ from standard production inspection plans by requiring 100% characteristic measurement against the engineering drawing. Configure dedicated FAI inspection plans on the Inspection Plans form with every dimension, tolerance, material specification, and process requirement from the part drawing captured as individual test criteria in the SLQualityInspPlanDetails IDO.

  • Create FAI-specific inspection plans with test criteria for every ballooned dimension on the engineering drawing numbered to match the balloon sequence
  • Configure material certification test lines requiring verification of material composition, heat treat, and surface treatment against specification requirements
  • Set up process parameter recording criteria for critical manufacturing characteristics (speed, feed, temperature, pressure) as FAI evidence
  • Define measurement method specifications on each test line (CMM, gauge, visual, functional) to ensure repeatable measurement approach across FAI events
  • Link engineering drawing revisions to FAI plan revisions to ensure the inspection plan always matches the current design intent

FAI Execution and Measurement Recording

Execute FAI inspections through the SyteLine Inspection form with all measurement results recorded against the FAI inspection plan. Configure the inspection form to capture actual measured values, specification limits, and pass/fail determination for each characteristic. SyteLine stores results in the SLQualityResults table providing the measurement database for FAI report generation.

  • Process FAI inspections on the Inspection form using the FAI plan which presents each balloon characteristic for measurement entry and pass/fail recording
  • Configure actual value recording with automatic pass/fail determination based on the specification limits defined in the FAI inspection plan criteria
  • Enable CMM data import capabilities to load coordinate measuring machine results directly into SLQualityResults for dimensional characteristics
  • Attach material certificates, test reports, and process records to the FAI inspection record using the Document Attachments feature for complete FAI package assembly

FAI Reporting and AS9102 Compliance

AS9102 requires FAI results documented on standardized forms (Form 1: Part Number Accountability, Form 2: Product Accountability - Raw Material, Form 3: Characteristic Accountability). Configure SyteLine reports or export templates that format FAI data from SLQualityResults into AS9102-compliant report formats for customer submission and quality record retention.

  • Configure AS9102 Form 1 report template extracting part number, revision, drawing number, and FAI reason from the inspection header and item master records
  • Set up AS9102 Form 2 report template pulling raw material specifications, supplier certifications, and material test report data from FAI quality results
  • Build AS9102 Form 3 report template displaying all characteristic measurements with balloon numbers, specification limits, actual values, and pass/fail status
  • Enable FAI status tracking on the Items form Quality tab with FAI Required, FAI In Progress, and FAI Approved status values for production release gating
  • Configure FAI re-qualification triggers for engineering changes, process changes, or manufacturing location changes that invalidate previous FAI approval status
